Canada’s First Magic Mushroom DispensaryCanada’s First Magic Mushroom Dispensary

With psychedelic mushrooms booming in popularity, one Vancouver business is flouting the law. It’s just the latest in a series of stores across Canada to sell the hallucinogenic drug known as Psilocybin. While it’s illegal to buy and sell the mushroom-like fungus, which is considered a Schedule 1 substance under federal drugs legislation, police have mostly turned a blind eye. Reviving Ancient Wisdom: Inside Magic Mushroom Dispensaries

Inside the shop, customers are greeted by a minimalist atmosphere featuring magic mushroom artwork and books about the drugs. They must show identification to prove they’re at least 19 years old and there are limits on how many grams of mushrooms a customer can purchase. There are different strains of mushrooms, with names like Penis Envy and Daddy Long Legs, ranging in price from $10 to $200 per gram. There’s also a wide variety of gummies, drinks and tinctures. A nurse who works at the store explains each item and recommends what type of mushroom best suits a customer’s needs, saying some are better for focus and energy while others are more relaxing.

It’s an approach that has been working in Portland, Oregon, where people over 21 can score the fungus with no ID required by purchasing it over-the-counter at the country’s first ever “magic mushroom dispensary.” The shop flaunts the state’s trailblazing 2020 law allowing psilocybin to be sold as a mental health treatment. The dispensary in Winnipeg is one of more than a dozen operated by a Canadian company called Fun Guyz, with locations in Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton. Police in each city have raided the shops, but they’ve always reopened within days.
